DAY 27, MAY 28, 2018

DAY 26. MAY 27  Just a laying low day.

You've Got a Friend In Me
You've got a friend in me
You've got a friend in me
You got troubles, I've got 'em too
There isn't anything I wouldn't do for you
We stick together and see it through
Cause you've got a friend in me
You've got a friend in me

I love humor and can frequently be found laughing out loud unabashedly in the card aisle of a store.  I often send greeting cards that joke about friends and family members getting older.  I guess a 40th birthday is when we start to feel comfortable poking fun at a person’s age.  What age does a person have to be for us to stop thinking it’s the best choice for a card?   I wouldn’t have thought to send my grandmother a funny card about age but most definitely wouldn’t have done so when she was in her 90’s and even 100’s.  She lived a couple months shy of her 105th.  At some point, age is more impressive than it is mockable (it’s a word, I looked it up).

I think I have sent my last card that jokes about aging.  I think we should commend people who beat the odds, who defy genes, those who take care of themselves nutritionally and with exercise, and of course those who are just plain fortunate.  My friends and family are here making my life better and that is something I value.  Send a card that says, “I am thankful you are here” rather than one that says, “I wish your birthday cake had handles, it’s extra large to hold all the candles.”

Last night, we celebrated my friend Cindy’s birthday.  I am grateful for every year she is here making my life better.  Here’s to getting older, it certainly beats the alternative.
